LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – There were sincere thank you's and salutes in downtown Louisville on Veterans Day. A crowd of thousands packed several blocks to show appreciation as Louisville metro's Veterans Day parade marched to the Kentucky Center.

On a warm and sunny fall day, workers in downtown office buildings bolted outside to take in the fresh air and pause for a few minutes. As the National Anthem was played, it resonated with families who made it a priority to take in the sights and sounds.

"I wanted to show both, especially my son who's a Tiger Cub, what it takes to be a free nation, said Jessica Fife of Louisville.

A mother of two, Fife wanted her sons to get up close and personal with veterans of World War II before it's too late.

"We're disappearing. Very quickly," said Carl Waddell, one of the remaining WWII veterans.

Today's event was a celebration that didn't happen for 60 years in Louisville. For the past three years, it's been an annual tradition.

"Appreciation for veterans has increased dramatically over the past few years," said Waddell.

If it's up to them, there will never be a year without a Veterans Day parade in Louisville again.

To show their appreciation for those who have and continue to serve, several restaurants are offering discounts and even free meals for veterans. The list can be found by clicking this link.
