TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) -

More than 6,000 people joined forces in Tempe on Saturday night for a special cause.

They helped raise more than $600,000 at the 15th annual "Light the Night Walk" for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society to help blood cancer patients.

Paul Horton and Nicole Crites from the CBS 5 Morning News team helped light balloons for people fighting the fight and others who've lost the battle.

The finds raised will help provide life-saving cancer research, financial assistance to cover patient expenses for transportation, medication and testing, free educational materials and advocacy for better treatments and healthcare reform.

Doctors told Ellery Queen seven years ago he only had three years to live.

Queen came out to share his story to never give up.

"You look around at all the red balloons, people do care," Queen said.

During the leisurely walk, Champions For Cures carry illuminated balloons - white for survivors, red for supporters and gold in memory of loved ones lost to cancer.
