PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The 3rd annual Phoenix National Veterans Day Run stepped off from the Phoenix Capitol complex Sunday.

A large number of veterans and active-duty military turned out to help Folds of Honor raise money to provide educational scholarships for military families.

The goal for this year's race was to raise $5,000.

According to the Folds of Honor website, more than 87 percent of the spouses and children affected by the recent wars do not qualify for federal scholarship assistance.

The race offered two distances, a timed 11k run and a one-mile family walk.

About 40 cities nationwide hold the event every year.
