NAU grant to improve schools on reservations

A $1 million grant to Northern Arizona University will help the Flagstaff-based school better prepare American Indian students to become principals.

The four-year grant was awarded by the U.S. Department of Education.

The money goes specifically to NAU's American Indian School Leadership project, which trains American Indian teachers to work in schools on reservations.

Past participants have received a principal certificate. The federal grant will give American Indian teachers an opportunity to earn a master's degree in educational leadership.

University officials say they expect to add 25 principals by 2017 under a program that starts in January. The principals will serve schools on the Hopi, Fort Apache, and Navajo reservations.
