CHICKASHA, OK (CNN/KFOR) - A Walmart worker is out of work after a gay couple said he told them to leave the store.

The couple said a janitor confronted them at a Walmart store in Chickasha, OK.

Jonathan Pacheco and his boyfriend, Miguel, were shopping to buy cookies at the store when Pacheco said the janitor approached them.

"We weren't holding hands, we weren't kissing," Pacheco said. "We weren't doing anything inappropriate. We were looking at cookies."

He said the employee approached and asked if he knew that a couple of men got married in Anadarko, a nearby town.

"I said ‘cool,'" Pacheco said. "And he said, ‘No. Not in my Bible. In my Bible it's Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve.'"

Pacheco said the janitor made it clear.

"He said, ‘you're not allowed in my store,'" Pacheco said. "I was hurt. I was just angry at the whole situation."

After telling a Walmart manager, the couple left.

The American Civil Liberties Union said the encounter came at an interesting time. U.S. Senators just passed a bill preventing employers from firing people based on sexual orientation.

"Then we hear right here in our own backyard where a couple doesn't even feel comfortable going shopping in their home town. So I think, that on one hand it says that we've made a lot of progress as a society, but it demonstrates we've got a long way to go," said Ryan Kiesel of the ACLU.

A Walmart spokeswoman called the incident "completely unacceptable" and said, "The associate involved is no longer with the company."
