Prison worker accused of trying to smuggle drugs into jail

GONZALES, LA (WAFB) -

A worker at Elayn Hunt Correctional Center has been arrested on suspicion of trying to smuggle drugs into the prison.

The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office said Daron Toussant Sr., 48, of Geismar, was arrested Thursday.

Deputies said authorities at Hunt Correctional in St. Gabriel began an internal investigation into Toussant allegedly trying to get illegal narcotics into the prison.

According to detectives, that investigation revealed Toussant allegedly had drugs at his home in Ascension Parish.

Narcotics deputies with APSO searched the home and reported finding marijuana, synthetic marijuana and a handgun.

Toussant was booked into the Ascension Parish Jail on the following charges:

Possession with intent to distribute marijuana

Possession with intent to distribute synthetic cannabinoid

Illegal carrying of a weapon

Illegal use of CDS in presence of a person under 17

Conspiracy to introduce contraband to a penal facility

Bond had not been set as of Friday morning.
