UNIONVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A locker room dare turned dangerous at a Bedford County high school, and now a teenager is in the hospital while another student is facing serious charges.

Gavin Evans and his freshman classmates were in the boys locker room getting changed for gym class at Community High School when they decided to play a game they call "tapping out."

Tapping out is a fad where teens put one arm around another's neck and choke the person until they pass out to get a thrill.

"The horseplay just turned, and it got real serious real quick," said Bedford County Sheriff's Capt. Tony Barrett.

In this case, the game escalated.

"The young man that was choked said that he couldn't be choked enough to make him pass out, and that's kind of where it all started," Barrett said.

From that challenge, the other classmate began to choke Gavin.

"But once he was choked, the other young man that was choking thought he had come to, and he let go. When he let go, [Gavin] fell face first and hit his head on the concrete," Barrett said.

Gavin suffered a concussion and was unresponsive on the locker room floor. He had to be flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he was placed in intensive care.

Gavin's family has been posting updates on Facebook, asking for prayers.

Investigators say the young man who choked Gavin is now facing aggravated assault charges and has also been suspended from school.

"I hope with what's going on with this charge - that they're going to realize how dangerous it is," Barrett said.

The superintendent has not decided if any other students involved will face disciplinary action.

A recent update from Gavin's family posted to the Facebook page says the young man suffered a subdural hematoma, but is now in stable condition and doing better.
