Work for uranium mine near Grand Canyon on standby

Posted: Updated:
FLAGSTAFF, AZ (AP) -

A uranium mining company that had been sinking a shaft for a mine south of the Grand Canyon is putting the work on hold.

Energy Fuels Resources Inc. says the operation will be on standby until December 2014 or a ruling is issued in a federal case challenging the U.S. Forest Service's decision to allow the Canyon Mine development. The company cited market conditions and the cost of litigation for the move.

Energy Fuels says it would give a two-week notice if it plans to resume work.

The mine sits in a nearly 1 million-acre area that has been placed off limits to new mining claims. The Canyon Mine can go forward because the uranium resources there already had been proven to be of sufficient quantity and quality.
