THIBODAUX, LA (WAFB) - From lights and sirens, to the snap of the cuffs, police departments often struggle to maintain a positive image. But Thibodaux Police have a new weapon in their arsenal.
Besides weekly crime stats, you'll find mostly positive news on the department's Facebook page. Every morning starts with the "great news of the day." but suspects and warnings show up too.
Officials say it needs to be a reciprocating relationship. It's also a relationship that can sour. The department watches for racist or vulgar posts and deletes them.
Thibodaux's approach has been so successful the department actually created a playbook. 30 pages of standard practices that can be used around the country. So far, 100 departments have picked up the guide.
The Baton Rouge Police Department has a copy too and says they're actively talking to other agencies to figure out the best approach. Many other local departments already use social media.
