Hopi Tribe ends dispute over transmission line

The Hopi Tribe has settled a longstanding dispute with an Arizona utility over a transmission line that crosses the reservation.

The tribe had granted approval to Arizona Public Service Co. in 1966 to run a 36-mile line on its land.

APS sought to renew the right of way in 1992 for the same price of about $24,000. The tribe objected but took no action for two decades.

Hopi Chairman Le Roy Shingoitewa announced an agreement this week with APS that gives the tribe a more than $20 million lump sum plus annual payments until 2041.

The chairman says APS separately responded to the tribal government's concerns about the power distribution system on the reservation by putting in new poles and line spacers.
