PHOENIX (CBS5) -
If you haven't tried the HCG Diet, chances are you know someone who has.
The diet claims rapid weight loss by using HCG, the hormone women produce when they are pregnant.
However, the Federal Trade Commission has filed a lawsuit against Arizona resident Kevin Wright, saying those claims are not true.
The lawsuit claims Wright and his company Right Way Nutrition have endangered customers for years, earning millions based on false weight-loss claims.
HCG Platinum claims to help you lose one to two pounds a day for weeks, and that the program is safe and proven to burn fat, reduce weight and lower cholesterol.
HCG dieters take a few drops three times a day, eat two meals a day of meat and vegetables, plus two fruits for a total of 500 calories.
Registered Dietician Monika Woolsey says the low calorie diet is likely why people lose weight, not the product. She also says those dieters are literally starving themselves.
would tell you if you are eating less than 12-hundred calories a day you are not sustaining life. And the type of weight you are losing is not fat it's muscle. And your heart is a muscle so you are potentially setting yourself up for some serious medical problems," Woolsey says.
Kevin Wright tells CBS 5 News that he has been working diligently to resolve this matter. Wright says he has ceased distribution and sales of the products listed in the complaints.
