BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A 37-year-old man was hospitalized after he was attacked and set on fire Saturday night, allegedly by a group of teens.

The Baton Rouge Police Department was dispatched to an area hospital around 10:30 p.m. The victim reportedly told officers the incident happened in the 6400 block of Greenwell Springs.

Investigators said a group of teens stole some coin change and a cigarette lighter from the victim.

"The victim was walking through an alley when he was approached by five juveniles," said Cpt. Don Coppola with the Baton Rouge Police Department. "One juvenile asked the victim for a cigarette. He said he didn't have one and that's when they attacked him."

The victim claimed he was beaten until he fell unconscious and he awoke to find his pants had been set on fire.

"He managed to pat out the fire and get help. Arson investigators responded to the scene and are assisting with the investigation," Coppola added.

Officials could not provide detailed descriptions of the suspects at this time.
