22 injured in school bus crash, 77-year-old bus driver cited

WEST BATON ROUGE PARISH, LA (WAFB) - Two school buses crashed in West Baton Rouge Parish Friday afternoon around 3 p.m. Acadian Ambulance says 21 children and one bus driver were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

The crash happened between Port Allen and Erwinville, LA in the 10100 block of North River Road.

Authorities say children were on board both buses when the crash happened.

Louisiana State Police say the children were reported to have "very minor injuries." Sheriff Mike Cazes says one bus was stopped and students were getting off the bus when the second bus crashed into the back of the first bus.

WBR Parish Schools' Superintendent David Corona says he has been updated on the situation. He says both of the principals from each school involved in the crash are on the scene, as well as a representative from his office.

The school buses involved are from Devall Middle School and Chamberlin Elementary School. Corona says all of the children have been picked up or transported to one of four different hospitals for precautionary measures.

AirMed transported more than one individual to a Baton Rouge hospital, but only because Acadian Ambulance ran out of ground units.

Authorities say 77-year-old Richard N. Lee, Jr. of Port Allen, the driver of the school bus who caused the crash, was cited for careless operation.
