Father shot after pushing children out of harms way

LAFAYETTE, LA (WAFB) - A Lafayette man is in the hospital after being shot in the stomach. Police say he pushed his children out of harms way just before he was shot.

It happened around 7:40 a.m. Thursday morning in the100 block of Tennessee. Police were called to the scene regarding an armed robbery.

According to the 55-year-old male victim, he was confronted by two male suspects as he exited his home under the carport.

The victim told police the two suspects demanded money from him and that is when the victim shoved his two children back inside the home. When the victim turned toward the suspects again, one of the suspects shot the victim once in the stomach with a handgun.

The suspects were last seen running toward Louisiana Avenue.

The victim was taken to an area hospital and is listed in guarded condition.

The two suspects are described as black males with one of the suspects wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and the second wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt. Police have received information that there were three black males standing near the intersection of Center and Tennessee Street prior to the robbery.
