ALEXANDER CITY, AL (WSFA) -

The Alexander City Police Department is investigating the cause of a fatal 2-vehicle crash that happened Wednesday evening along Highway 280.

Capt. Tommy Lovett says the crash happened around 6 p.m. when a van crossing Hwy. 280 at Dean Road was hit broadside by an SUV.

Capt. Lovett says the van was carrying a male driver, a pregnant front seat passenger and two children who were in the back seats.

The SUV was driven by a female who Capt. Lovett said was not seriously injured and has since been released.

Two victims were flown by medical helicopter to UAB where one remains in the ICU. The other three victims were transported by ambulance to nearby hospitals.

While the police department says the person in ICU and the fatality both came from the van, they are not releasing any identifying information pending notification of next of kin.

Capt. Lovett says charges may be filed, but adds the investigation is ongoing and nothing has been finalized.
