(CNN) - Walmart plans to promote 25,000 employees by the end of January.
The announcement comes amid criticism surrounding worker pay at the retail giant.
Walmart said the promotions will affect employees in both hourly and management positions and will come with higher pay and increased responsibilities.
The promotions will bring Walmart's annual tally to more than 160,000, which is roughly the same number of promotions as last year.
The announcement comes just days after a democratic lawmaker criticized the firm's executives as "welfare kings," citing the store's average full-time annual wage of roughly $26,000 a year.
