ASCENSION PARISH, LA (WAFB) -

Multiple arrests were made by the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office in a drug bust via the U.S. Postal Service of 20 pounds of marijuana that resulted from a 3-day investigation.

APSO Narcotics detectives teamed up with the U.S. Postal Inspectors and began a surveillance of Gonzales resident Miram Lazo Garcia, 43.

While under surveillance, Garcia arrived at a local post office on Thursday, October 24th and took a package containing marijuana. Garcia was immediately placed under arrest. Detectives discovered that she was supposed to deliver the package to two Prairieville residents and receive $500.

The recipients of the package, 33-year-old Enrique Romo Bustos and 28-year-old Claudio Alejo Equia, were later taken into custody. Immigration authorizes have placed a hold on Bustos and Equia, who are both in the country illegally.

According to a report from the APSO, Equia was charged with conspiracy to possession with intent to distribute marijuana. Bustos received possession charges with the intent to distribute. Both also received immigration fugitive charges, and their bond was set at $150,000 each.

The report also revealed that deputies searched Garcia's home and found an additional pound of marijuana, cocaine, drug paraphernalia, and two weapons. As a result of the search, deputies recovered the drugs and obtained an outstanding warrant on Garcia's boyfriend, 31-year-old Renee Martinez of 921 South Ashley Drive in Gonzales.

Garcia was charged with possession charges and illegal carrying of a weapon. Her bond was set at $83,342.50.

Martinez is also illegally in the United States. He is currently wanted on possession charges and illegal carrying of weapons, and his whereabouts are unknown. Because Martinez is in the country illegally, the deputies do not have a photo ID, driver's license, or additional information available on him.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Rene Martinez or illegal drug activity is urged to contact the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office Narcotics Division at 225-621-8350 or by texting 847411 to the anonymous tip line from any cellular device. You may also contact Crime Stoppers at 225-344-STOP (7867).
