State Superintendent proposes ending agreement with 2 national entities

State Superintendent of Education Dr. Tommy Bice has proposed a resolution to rescind its 2009 Memorandum of Agreement with the National Governor's Association and Council for Chief State School Officers.

The resolution was made in an effort to reassure the public that Alabama remains in complete control of its academic standards, according to the State Board of Education.

At Thursday's State Board of Education work session, Bice said the purpose of the original memorandum was to acknowledge the development of a set of internationally benchmarked standards that could be shared across states.

Bice said ending to agreement would remove any question about whether Alabama's standard were in fact state initiated and a state-led effort.

"[The resolution] affirms that the governance of our standards is retained by our Alabama State Board of Education as recommended through our state approved standards development, review and recommendation process," Bice said. "This was conducted by Alabama teachers, principals, college professors and appointees representing educational experts from throughout our state."
