GONZALES, LA (WAFB) -

Officials with  the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office are investigating a fatal shooting that happened late Thursday night in Gonzales, LA. They have identified both the victim and the suspect in the shooting.

Just after 11 p.m., deputies were called to a home in the 42000 block of Cannon Road. Deputies found 34-year-old Jules Bennett Weil in a pickup truck with a gunshot wound.

During the investigation, deputies learned that Weil and 26-year-old David Adams Jr. of Prairieville were at the home and Adams "became agitated" that Weil did not want to leave with him.

According to investigators, Weil eventually agreed to leave with Adams. Seconds after they left, witnesses say they heard gunfire. The witnesses found Weil shot inside the truck and Adams had left the scene.

Weil was taken to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Adams was found a short time later, not far from the scene of the shooting. He was taken into custody.

According to Ascension Parish Chief Criminal Deputy Tony Bacala, the investigation is still ongoing and there is no clear motive to the shooting.

Adams was arrested and charged with second degree murder.
