Healthy BR Food Week kicks off Friday

Mayor Kip Holden will officially kick off Baton Rouge's Healthy Food Week Friday at Live After Five. The 7-day initiative features community events that promote healthy, affordable and sustainable food. It culminates with National Food Day on October 24.

Here are the highlights:

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 19

 

  • 10 AM - City Club Executive Chef Eric Arceneaux will lead a fun, healthy cooking demonstration at the Downtown Red Stick Farmers Market 

 

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 20

  • 4 PM - Slow Food, Fall Heat: A farm to table fundraiser featuring local celebrity chefs, brewers, music and art at the Burden Center's Orangerie. Tickets: SlowFoodBR.org
MONDAY, OCTOBER 21

 

  • Some schools around Baton Rouge will begin week-long food drives to benefit the Baton Rouge Food Bank. One school is planning a healthy food mural while others are working on school garden projects and integrating food education in their classrooms
  • The East Baton Rouge Parish Library will feature fun displays, including healthy cookbooks and food documentaries at several branches during Healthy BR Food Week
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 22
  • 6 PM - Free screening of food documentary A Place at the Table along with panel discussion & expo at the Dalton J. Woods Auditoriumin the ECE Building at LSU
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 23
  • 12 PM - Chefs Outreach to the Community Day for Capitol Middle at Star Hill held by the American Culinary Federation, Red Stick Mobile Farmers Market, BREC on the Geaux and the EBRPL Bookmobile
  • 4 PM - EBR Food Acces Policy Commission to present latest findings to Metro Council at City Hall
  • 7 PM - Kitchens on the Geaux hosts their 5th annual Oxfam Hunger Banquet at LSU
