GONZALES, LA (WAFB) - It was a big day for some elementary students in Ascension Parish.
It's the first time they're setting foot in the new Carver Primary School in Gonzales. Teachers spent last week preparing lesson plans and putting up decorations.
Among the improvements in the new building is a state-of-the-art library, as well as bright color-coded hallways. The first day of school is something everyone's been looking forward to for a long time.
"We are living history today," said Principal Latatia Johnson. "They will be able to tell their children and their grandchildren that they were the first class on the new campus. So, it's very exciting, very emotional for me."
The new facility replaces one built in the 1960s.
