BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - It's a troubling statistic. One in four women in America will experience domestic violence in their lifetime. Louisiana consistently has one of the highest rates of domestic homicides. It's a trend that must be reversed.
October is domestic violence awareness month, designed to both raise awareness and support survivors. Advocacy groups also want to bring attention to the lack of resources and closure of some shelter programs in recent years due to reduced funding.
You can help by making a donation or asking your legislator not to reduce funding for these services. And, while resources are an issue, there is still help available. If you know someone who is a victim of domestic violence, encourage them to call one of the numbers below. It's a phone call that just might save their life.
(Iris Domestic Violence Center: 225-389-3001 or the Louisiana Coalition of Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-888-411-1333)
