Southern University dormitories scheduled for demolition

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Some old eyesores on the Southern University campus are finally coming down. The Louisiana Legislature has approved funding for some dire demolition.

The residential area of the Southern University Baton Rouge campus, lovingly known to students as the Magnolia Triangle, is in shambles. Piles of old furniture sit outside the courtyard of four dormitories that have been cleared for razing.

The buildings scheduled for demolition include:
Morris Henry Carroll Hall
Mildred McKinley Satterwhite Hall
Ollie Butler Moore Hall
Octavia Head Clark Hall

The dilapidated dormitories, built in mid-1950s, have been deemed health hazards. No one's lived in them for nearly a decade. Southern University Chancellor James Llorens said, until now the university never had the money to destroy them.

"This has been something that we've been trying to find the funds necessary to demolish for a number of years even before I became chancellor," Llorens said.

The demolition has been a long time coming. As for what's to come, university leaders said there are several options on the table.

"Something like a walking path or exercise path with different stations that students will be able to conduct certain exercises," Llorens said.

A lot of the students who walk the campus today won't be around to see what tomorrow will bring. But they have big dreams for the students who follow in their footsteps.

"I think it would be a great place to put another facility for people to live so more students can come. Being on campus is like having a whole other family. You have so many people around you. Sometimes you gather outside in the circle area and talk and meet new people. So it's like having a brand new family when you stay on campus," Student Government Association President, Simone Bray said.

The demolition is expected to be finished in early 2014.
