Food stamp service restored after outage

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Folks in Ohio, Michigan and several other states Saturday couldn't use their food stamp debit cards but company responsible for administering the cards says the problem has been resolved.

The Xerox Corporation says that access to food stamp systems has been restored in the 17 states that were affected by the outage.

A power outage at Xerox was the initial cause of the problem.

Jennifer Wasmer, a spokesperson for Xerox, says it took time to restore the system and make sure it was functioning properly.

There were plenty of frustrated shoppers Saturday at the Seaway Marketplace in Central Toledo and other grocery stores across the country.

"That's crazy because how is everybody going to eat if we don't have food stamps," said food stamp recipient Anissia Grant.

Ohio's cash and food assistance card systems crashed at 11:00 Saturday morning.

A spokesperson for the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services though says the state's cash system was immediately fixed.

Still down though was the electronic benefits transfer card system.

All 17 states using the Xerox system were affected.

"I feel like I'm mad because I had to pay money," said April Grant-Ross.

"It's an inconvenience because I have to not only nourish myself but I have to feed my family," said Marvin Wadley.

Despite the inconvenience, management at Seaway Marketplace allowed anyone with the electronic cards to still shop.

"What we've done is we tell customers to come in and shop. We put the groceries in the cooler for them with their name on it and when the system is up and running they can come back and retrieve their groceries and we'll run them through the checkout," said store manager Jerry Lefebvre.
