BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Education is always at hot topic in Louisiana, with the focus now shifting to the Common Core standards. Some parents and teachers are concerned about making the transition.
Exxon and the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry hosted a meeting Friday morning to discuss the recently implemented Common Core state standards.
Louisiana adopted the Common Core standards in 2010, but this is the first school year it's been implemented in classrooms. The new standards focus on the core subjects - math and language arts.
Students are now being taught a more rigorous lesson, which is meant to allow them to compete with students from other states when they get to college and in the work world.
While some educational groups praise the new standards, some fear the assignments are too difficult for children and argue the state and parents should decide what and how Louisiana children learn.
