G.W. Carver Primary school move-in day approaching

GONZALES, LA (WAFB) - Some students in Ascension Parish are about to dive into a whole new world. Construction on the new G.W. Carver Primary school is just about finished.

At the old school, the boxes are packed. The walls have been stripped bare. Students and teachers are taking their final steps through the halls of Carver Primary. Outside, maintenance crews are busy packing furniture and school supplies into portable pods.

The moving process is well underway. The storage units are rolling onto the new grounds less than two miles away. Some teachers have gotten a peek inside the new school, but the students have no idea what to expect.

Teacher Jennifer Calloway, said her students are full of questions.

"What does it look like? What do the bathrooms look like? Do we have a playground? Do we have a gym? What does cafeteria look like? Is there a stage? They're excited," Calloway said.

The new school has it all, color-coded hallways, a state-of-the-art library, and more. As for the playground, students might recognize the big jungle gym.

School secretary, Kelly Ahcord is already making herself at home in her new office.

"The whole move has been exciting," Ahcord said.

She's also helped organize the big move.

"We found a lot of pictures, record players, a lot of treasures that we're going to bring here and display because we do want to honor the history," Ahcord said.

Ahcord's roots run deep.

"I started there as a student and my girls went there. So, there's a lot of history for us," Ahcord said.

Boxes still line some of the entrances but it's clear teachers are eager to get started. Some have specially prepared lesson plans for the first day at the new school. But there's still plenty of work to be done before their little ones take their seats.

"I have to unpack everything, decorate the walls. I want them to come into a nice atmosphere. I want it to feel just like a classroom should," Calloway said.

Students will move into the new school when they return from fall break next Wednesday.
