A new task force held its first meeting Thursday to discuss tuition at Louisiana public universities.
Earlier this year, lawmakers created the new group consisting of higher education leaders. They plan to look at how increased tuition will affect the TOPS program.
In addition, the task force will study ways to make college more affordable and new ways to charge tuition.
"I have a lot of hope for this task force, made up of some great people - over half are students - that we can get some creative solutions that hopefully we can take back to the legislature this year," said Rep. Stephen Ortego (D) of Carencro.
Two-thirds of Louisiana lawmakers must approve an increase for that to happen.
Louisiana is the only state with that requirement.
