Police search for truck used in drive-by shooting that left 7-year-old wounded

HAMMOND, LA (WAFB) - Police are looking for a truck and the two people who were inside after a 7-year-old boy was shot in a drive-by shooting Wednesday evening.

The Hammond Police Department said it happened on South Morrison Boulevard in Hammond just before 6 p.m.

According to detectives, the woman who was a passenger in the front seat of the vehicle that was shot said they noticed a pickup following closely behind them and later drove up beside them.

Officers reported the woman told them as they were passing a Circle K on South Morrison she noticed her passenger side window was shattered, but didn't notice what caused it. She added the truck stopped following them when they merged onto I-55 South.

Reports indicate the woman said it wasn't until they turned off I-55 at the Ponchatoula exit and stop at a store that they realized the boy had been shot in the hip. He was sitting in the back seat.

Police said she explained they first called 911, but then decided to drive to North Oaks Hospital. The boy was last listed in stable condition.

The truck is described as a two-door dark blue Dodge pickup. The year is unknown.

Anyone with information about the shooting, the truck or the suspects is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-554-5245 or the Hammond Police Department at 985-277-5743.
