Vanessa Nguyen: Multimedia Journalist

Vanessa Nguyen Vanessa Nguyen

Vanessa Nguyen joined WTOC in July 2013 as one of the multimedia journalists representing the South Carolina Lowcountry.

She grew up in Savannah, Georgia and briefly interned with WTOC while attending the University of Georgia. Vanessa graduated with a Broadcast Journalism degree and a minor in both Religion and Speech Communication.

Vanessa started her reporting career down in Northwest Florida, where she became the first bureau reporter to work simultaneously for WJHG and its two sister stations, WTVY & WCTV. During her two years reporting for the three TV stations, Vanessa co-earned a 2nd place AP award  in 2009 on the national investigation of 32 unmarked graves at the Florida School for Boys in Marianna.  A year later, her reports on the international disappearance of 8-month-old Shannon Dedrick helped WJHG win a 2nd place AP award for 'Best Spot News' and 1st place for 'Best Continuing Coverage.'

After that, Vanessa transitioned over to Florida State University as a digital content producer, tackling the role of being one of the main radio voices for the university's local NPR show, reporting on FSU's research initiatives and co-hosting its monthly TV show. Among her favorite moments were interviewing Major League Baseball's Tony La Russa, former Dancing with the Stars Champion JR Martinez and ESPN College Gameday's Lee Corso.

Vanessa recently returned from living overseas in Sydney, Australia and traveling through part of Southeast Asia earlier this year. Aside from wanderlust, she also enjoys photography, learning new languages and cultures (she's re-learning Vietnamese and Spanish), supporting the UGA Dawgs and anything involving good food!

Born in Saigon, Vietnam, she's a second-generation Vietnamese-American. Vanessa is glad to be back closer to family and friends while discovering life in the Lowcountry. Feel free to say hello or drop her a line at vnguyen@wtoc.com
