This week (October 6 through October 12) is National Fire Prevention Week. And, with cooler temps rolling into our area, firefighters say there are precautions you can take to stay safe.
Remember to properly clean any chimneys before using fire places for the first time. Portable space heaters should never be placed close to combustibles, like curtains or clothing. When using space heaters, always plug them directly into the wall and avoid using extension cords.
Nearly two-thirds of reported home fire deaths result from fires in homes with no smoke detectors. Remember to test your smoke detectors and replace batteries if necessary. Working smoke detectors cut the risk of dying in a house fire in half.
And finally, have an escape plan in place so that everyone in
your family knows what to do in the event of a fire.
