(CNN) - Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti was involved in a serious crash that hurt 13 spectators during the Grand Prix of Houston.
The wreck occurred in the last lap of the race Sunday when Franchitti's car was bumped by Japanese driver Takuma Sato.
The impact sent Franchitti's car airborne into protective fencing, sending pieces of debris flying toward the grandstands.
Franchitti's team owner told NBC sports the race car driver was sore, awake and alert after the crash.
Fire officials say two of the 13 spectators injured were sent to the hospital - the rest were treated at the scene.
Franchitti is married to actress Ashley Judd.
The couple announced they were splitting in January.
