NEW ORLEANS, LA (WAFB) -
Attorneys said Angola 3 member Herman Wallace, who was set free Tuesday after decades in solitary confinement, died early Friday morning.
Wallace suffered from cancer. He was 71 years old. He spent more than 41 years in prison.
endured what very few of us can imagine, and he did it with grace, dignity, and
empathy to the end," his legal team stated in a written release. "He remained committed to standing up for himself and his
fellow prisoners, including Albert Woodfox who is still kept in harsh solitary
confinement conditions in a Louisiana prison. Despite the cruelty Herman was
shown, he had no hatred in his heart."
US District Chief Judge Brian Jackson overturned his murder conviction
Tuesday. He also ordered a new trial for and Wallace's immediate
release. Wallace was taken to a Hospice center Tuesday night.
"Although his freedom was much too brief, it
meant the world to Herman to spend these last three days surrounded by the love
of his family and friends. One of the final things that Herman said to us was,
‘I am free. I am free,'" the attorneys added.
Wallace was indicted again Thursday for the 1972 murder. He spent decades in solitary confinement at the state penitentiary at Angola and another prison. Wallace was serving a sentence for armed robbery when he was convicted of fatally stabbing a guard at Angola prison. He was then moved into solitary confinement.
On Thursday, a West Feliciana Parish grand jury re-indicted Wallace for the 1972 murder of the prison security guard.
In 2009, Wallace was moved to "closed-cell restriction" at Elayn Hunt Correctional Center and recently was taken to the prison's hospital unit.
