State of Emergency Declared for Plaquemines Parish

BELLE CHASSE, LA (WAFB) -

As of 3 p.m. on Thursday, Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser has declared a state of emergency for Plaquemines Parish.

A mandatory evacuation order is in place for the east bank of Plaquemines Parish and communities on the west bank without levee protection.

A voluntary evacuation has been called for the west bank of the parish from Ironton to Venice.

The Belle Chasse Auditorium opened at 6 p.m. Friday as a place of shelter. Residents are asked to bring their own provisions to the shelter.

If you need help evacuating, call the Plaquemines Parish Emergency Operation Center at 504-297-5670.

Officials have also put a 24-hour curfew in effect for the east bank of Plaquemines Parish.

All Plaquemines Parish Schools are open on Friday, October 4, 2013.

All Plaquemines Parish Recreation Department games are canceled for this weekend.

"We are fully prepared for a potential heavy rain event," said Nungesser. "All pump stations are operational and we have crews on stand-by."
