EBRSO deputy dies in crash

CENTRAL, LA (WAFB) - A deputy with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office was killed in crash Friday evening.

Authorities said Deputy Dustin Hamilton, 24, of Central died in the wreck. He had been with the sheriff's office just under two years.

"So obviously, everyone's very devastated right now," said EBRSO spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks. "We're just working closely with state police and we appreciate their help."

The crash happened on Joor Road between Mickens Road and Lovette Road near Central around 7:30 p.m. Louisiana State Police is investigating the crash.

According to LSP, Hamilton was heading home from an off-duty detail at the time of the accident. Trooper Jared Sandifer said Hamilton car and a vehicle headed in the opposite direction collided.

EBRSO spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks said Sheriff Sid Gautreaux described Hamilton as, "somebody who really wanted to be a deputy" and "was excited about law enforcement."

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to Sheriff Gautreaux and his entire family," said Sandifer. "This one hits close to home, without a doubt."
