BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - I get them all the time and I'm sure you do, too. The phone rings and someone asks me to donate to a charity. But, how do you know which charities to give to and which not to?
The Center for Investigative Reporting recently published a list of what they call America's Worst Charities. The list was created to alert potential donors to the risks of donating to big charities that aren't so charitable. The 50 organizations on the list were ranked based on the amount of money they spent on solicitors instead of helping others.
In all, these 50 charities have spent nearly $1 billion paying for solicitors over the past decade. The most egregious offender is the Kids Wish Network, which has spent over $100 million on solicitors, while using only 2.5 percent of donations on direct cash aid. That means that only 50 cents of a $20 donation goes to directly aid children.
Giving to charity is a good thing, but make sure you do a little research before you donate and keep in mind there are always good local charities in need of your help.
