ASCENSION PARISH, LA (WAFB) - In one of Louisiana's fastest growing parishes, people are feeling better about the future these days. The latest good news: Governor Bobby Jindal announced Shell Gas may consider Ascension Parish to be the home of their next big plant facility.
According to Governor Jindal, if the project comes to fruition, it will mean 740 new jobs coming to the area.
"They will be extremely well paying even for this area. Normally the jobs here are well paying anyway," said Mike Eades president of Ascension economic development.
Eades says the project is still it its early stages. He says the Mississippi River is a big reason why Ascension is ideal for Shell.
"Being able to utilize the river for barging and panamax shipping, " said Eades.
Eades also said it will be a while until they know for sure if shell chooses Ascension. This excitement also comes at the right time for those looking for work.
"I would get in a plant because it's a great opportunity, " said Kelvin Christmas.
Christmas is going off to Job Corps to find a trade. Although he is leaving he believes Shell could be a great thing for the parish.
"Not a lot of people have jobs, a lot of people are unemployed nowadays," said Christmas.
