HAMMOND, LA (WAFB) - Authorities said an ongoing investigation into illegal alcohol sales to minors has resulted in citations to more than 90 retailers.

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office said juveniles were sent undercover to go into stores and try to buy alcohol illegally. According to Sheriff Daniel Edwards, nearly 500 undercover visits were made over the past year.

"We are making progress," Edwards explained. "I am extremely pleased with the efforts of my detectives. We see underage drinking and the purchasing of alcohol for underage consumption as a community-wide issue that will take the combined efforts of law enforcement and our community to combat."

Investigators said selling alcohol to minors can result in a fine of $500. The fine can go up to $1,000 for a second offense. Store owners can lose their alcohol license for a third offense.
