Suspected drunk driver crashes into home

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Investigators said door-to-door destruction was done by a drunk driver Wednesday afternoon.

It happened on West Versailles Drive in the Millerville area a short time after kids got home from school. Now, neighbors are left with a mess to clean up.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office said Eugenio Tomas Valdes Cuellar, 43, registered .337 on the breathalyzer test, which is four times the legal limit. Cuellar is charged with DWI, reckless operation and two counts of property damage.

Neighbors received a rude awakening and the end result was a sport utility vehicle halfway inside a house after crashing through the front wall.

Witnesses said it first plowed over a neighbor's mailbox and then knocked over another neighbor's basketball goal. They said the SUV then crossed back across the street into a fence. Neighbors added the driver backed across the street in reverse into another mailbox, some trees and bushes and then forward across the street one more time and into the house. In all, a total of four properties were damaged.

"I skinned my hand getting the door open to get him out," said James Gilbert. "He didn't want to get out. I turned the key off, undone the seatbelt and got him out of the car and made him get on the ground."

Gilbert stayed with the driver while Jeremy Landry, the homeowner with the most damage, got a call at work.

"Got a call from my mother who had been contacted by neighbors and couldn't believe what she was talking about until I saw it," said Landry.

The destruction left behind speaks for itself but some still can't believe it wasn't much worse.

"At the end of our street is a school and if he had gotten another half a block, he could have hurt a lot of people," said Susan Olman.

Cuellar remained locked up in the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison as of Wednesday night.
