BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A group of parents is fighting to get air conditioning in every school in East Baton Rouge.
Students at Baton Rouge Foreign Language Academic Immersion Magnet are taking PE class in a hot gym. There are a few windows open here and there, but most of them are painted shut.
Amber Moran showed 9News a picture that shows a thermometer in the gym with a temperature of nearly 100 degrees.
"It's unbearable and they can't even have practice in the gym on most days because the temperatures are from 90 degrees to 100, so they're doing modified gym class in their classrooms," said Moran, who is a former president of the school's PTO.
A spokesman for the school system says board members are in the process of putting together a list of schools that lack air conditioning in gyms and kitchen areas. It will be submitted to the superintendent for budget approval.
The PTO has offered to pay for air conditioning in the gym, but members say the school board would not allow it because it would require them to rewire the old building.
