Loren Mitchell named Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week

Posted:

NEW ORLEANS (SunBeltSports.org) - A pair of sophomores earned this week's Sun Belt Conference Women's Soccer Players of the Week honors as Arkansas State's Loren Mitchell claimed the offensive honor and WKU's Chandler Clark was awarded the defensive nod, the league office announced on Tuesday.

Mitchell, a Lawrenceville, Ga. native, helped Arkansas State go undefeated over the weekend, picking up a pair of victories over Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Murray State. Mitchell scored a goal in the 58th minute of A-State's 5-0 win over UAPB on a rain soaked Friday afternoon and then scored two goals in the Red Wolves' 3-1 victory over Murray State Sunday afternoon.

Mitchell's two goals against the Racers tied a career-high for the sophomore and she now has a team-high six goals on the year, which is also tied for the seventh most in a single season in school history. She has accumulated 32 points in her career at Arkansas State, a mark that is tied for the fifth most in school history. It was Mitchell's second career match with two or more goals. She is the team leader in points with 15 and ranks fourth in the SBC. Mitchell's six goals rank fourth in the league as well.

Clark has emerged as a staple on WKU's backline and played in all 200 minutes of Lady Topper action over the weekend, aiding a defensive effort that allowed just seven shots on goal in WKU's two weekend games.

Her versatility and quickness is a significant reason why WKU has allowed a Sun Belt low nine goals. Her athleticism also sparked WKU on the offensive end in Sunday's win over Lipscomb as she won a header in traffic off a corner kick to score her first goal of the season. She fired three shots in the pair of games, all of which were on goal.

With non-conference action complete, SBC teams will now turn their attention to the Conference slate of matches with the focus on earning a berth in the SBC Championship. This year's tournament will be held at Texas State University at the Bobcat Soccer Complex from November 6 through November 10.

Eight of the nine SBC women's soccer teams will qualify for the tournament with the tournament champion moving onto the NCAA Tournament to represent the league as the SBC's automatic qualifier.
