WILLS POINT, TX (KLTV) -
An East Texas man is dead after being hit by a train Monday night.
According to the Wills Point Police Department, 56-year-old Guy Richard Herrin of Wills Point was killed just before 8 p.m. Monday in the 500 block of East North Commerce St. in Wills Point, about a quarter mile east of the Fourth Street crossing.
Wills Point Police Chief Scott Johnson says Herrin and two other men left a convenience store on Commerce Street. Johnson says the two other men crossed the tracks and kept walking, but Herrin refused to get off the tracks, even at the urging of the two men.
Chief Johnson says that as the Union Pacific cargo train traveled eastbound out of Wills Point, Herrin held up his hand and said something to the effect of,"I love you guys," before being hit by the train.
The Dallas County Medical Examiner's office is conducting an autopsy and the Van Zandt County Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace's office is also investigating. Preliminary investigation reports are expected within two weeks, although a full investigation may take up to three months.
Authorities say an unopened six-pack was recovered at the scene, but it's not known whether Herrin was under the influence of any substance. A toxicology report is being conducted along with the autopsy.
Railroad tracks in the area were closed for about 30 minutes. At one point, the train that hit the victim was broken at one crossing toallow trafficc through.
Johnson said it was unclear how many crew members were on the train at the time of the incident or where the train was going. Police say they are waiting on a recording from the train to learn more details about the incident.
Authorities cleared the scene around 9 p.m. Monday.
