927th Deployment Ceremony

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Another set of troops is going overseas to Afghanistan. Friday's ceremony was for state National Guard members. And it's a step leading to a long time away. No one knows that better than Sgt. Nethan Pelican as he leaves his wife and three daughters.  Pelican says there are many reasons why he is fighting for his country.

"I love the uniform. I love what we have in the United States. We fight for our freedom for our rights and to have a choice," said Pelican.

Pelican is one of the many soldiers of 927th engineer company getting ready to ship out of Afghanistan.

More than 90 guardsmen were surrounded by love ones wishing them well at Bethany World Prayer Center in Baton Rouge. This will be Pelican's third deployment, but he knows reality for his daughter won't come until late.

"Once daddy's gone, it may hit them then. But right now it's not," said Pelican.

The company has been to Afghanistan before in 2008. They will officially head overseas in a few months to supper Operation Enduring Freedom.
