NEW ROADS, LA (WAFB) - Authorities arrested a man on arson charges in connection with several house fires Tuesday and Wednesday.

Nicholas Powell, 19, of New Roads was arrested Wednesday afternoon on two counts of aggravated arson.

The arrest happened after the State Fire Marshal's Office worked with the New Roads Fire Department on six fires they deemed suspicious.

"We met back and we started putting the info together and citizens came forward - some in anonymous capacity - which we encourage," said State Fire Marshal Butch Browning. "That provided great information that has gotten us to this point."

Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff Bud Torres said the investigation is ongoing and he believes more charges and arrests are possible.

"This person was not acting alone," said Torres. "We are working the other fires as we speak and we are confident more arrests will come."

Despite the arrest of Powell, Torres said his office and the New Roads Police Department will continue to beef up patrols and are asking residents to remain on guard.
