BAYOU VISTA, LA (WAFB) - Authorities said a man accused of riding on the hood of a car and shattering the windshield to stop a woman from leaving is now locked up on serious charges.

The St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office reported Abel Ortiz, 35, of Bayou Vista, was arrested early Tuesday morning after the incident. He was taken into custody just after 1 a.m.

According to reports, Ortiz and the woman got into an argument at a home and when the suspect went into the kitchen, the woman grabbed her 1-year-old and hopped into a car.

Deputies said Ortiz jumped onto the hood with a knife while she was driving away. They added the woman continued driving with him on the hood because she feared for her safety and that of her child.

SMPSO reported once she reached LA 182, Ortiz started hitting the windshied with the butt of the knife and actually shattered it, which sent broken glass flying at the woman and child.

According to investigators, the child was not hurt but the broken glass cut the woman on her foot. No other information about the injury was provided.

The sheriff's office said it received a call of a disturbance on Teche Road in Bayou Vista and the responding deputy detained Ortiz as he was walking away from the damaged car. The woman and child were still inside.

Ortiz was booked into the parish jail on charges of domestic abuse aggravated assault (Child Endangerment Law) and aggravated criminal damage to property. No bond was set.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
