LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - High school football is intense around Kentuckiana. One game turned out to be terrifying for a family in Louisville. Not because of who won or lost, but because of what happened to one of the players.

Jacob Quaife is a senior at Waggener High School. He plays running back and safety for the Waggener Wildcats. On Friday, the football team played Moore at Moore, everything was going fine until Jacob was rushed to Kosair Children's Hospital.

"He was confused about the plays. he wasn't doing what the coaches told him to do," said Stacie Quaife.

Jacob's coach noticed the odd behavior too.

"I've been through numerous concussions before, certain things like that, getting your bell rung," said coach Jason Stallard. "This is the first time this serious."

Jacob said he couldn't feel his right leg. He began walking off the field and his teammates noticed he was about to fall and got him to the sideline. EMT's, who were already at the game, rushed to help. Soon after Jacob was rushed to Kosair Children's Hospital.

Doctors say he suffered a brain injury from the blows he got during the game.

He went into emergency brain surgery.

"They did have to lift his skull to drain the bleeding and they were able to put the skull back on," said Quaife. "It sounds graphic and traumatic and it is."

He's recovering now, even giving a thumbs up in a recent picture. One of the coaches gave Stacie her son's jersey back, which was cut off of him Friday night.

She hopes Jacob can one day get back to the game he loves.

"Right now we're just happy to take the miracle of him being alive and being cognitive and able to walk," said Quaife. "We'll take one miracle at a time."

Jacob should be out of the hospital in the next day or two. It will be weeks, maybe even months before he is fully recovered.

It's called white spot syndrome virus and it was first discovered in Thailand, but somehow it made its way to ponds in South Louisiana and specialists are struggling to find the funds to research a solution.  “The catch was increasing and increasing and then it dropped 70% and that's when you saw the dead crawfish floating in the water,” said a crawfish farmer of 34 years, Ian Garbarino.
