Interception sparks Winston's improved play

TALLAHASSEE, FL (WALB) -

It took FSU quarterback Jameis Winston a while to get going Saturday against Nevada but once he did, he pleased the home fans at Doak Campbell Stadium.

After a 2-4 start that included an interception, the redshirt freshman completed his next 13 passes. Two of those were touchdown and he also picked one up on the ground to contribute to the 62-7 win.

"He made a mistake, but he didn't get gun shy," said Seminole head coach Jimbo Fisher. "He went right back in and started making throws and made some good plays."

The game was Winston's first at home after starting the season with a win at Heinz Field against Pittsburgh.

"I was pumped. I tried to do too much," Winston said. "That's why I think I forced that turnover. I wasn't even supposed to go back there."

Winston has been spectacular early this season with 6 touchdown passes and only five incompletions. Fisher says facing some early adversity, like he did on Saturday, will be good for him going on.

"Until they happen, you don't know, you know" Fisher said. "They're going to happen in bigger games, in bigger moments. He's just gotta keep growing with it."

Winston's chance at quarterback will be next Saturday against Bethune Cookman.

If the Saints wanted to keep their playoff hopes alive, yes I know it's only two games into the season, they needed a win in Carolina today. Thanks to three Drew Brees touchdown passes, the Black and Gold did just that, beating the Panthers 34-13. Brees was 22-of-29 passing, for 220 yards on the afternoon. His counterpart, Cam Newton, struggled in Charlotte going 17-of-26 passing, with a 167 yards and three interceptions. Trailing 3-0 early in the contest, Brees and the Saints went ...
