A medical examiner is working to find out more details on a body that was found in the desert off Interstate 8 on Friday.

Maricopa County Sheriff's Office spokesman Lt. Brandon Jones said a group of people four-wheeling in the desert near I-8 mile marker 132 discovered the body Friday.

Deputies responded and the body was taken to the medical examiner's office.

The death marks at least 16 bodies that have been discovered since June in an area known for human trafficking. Sheriff's deputies were involved in more than 30 rescues in the same area this summer, according to MCSO.

On Aug. 15, Sheriff Joe Arpaio held a news briefing where he displayed 45 crosses in the desert to send a message urging people not to attempt a desert crossing.

"Cross No. 1 will be placed in the desert (today) as a reminder not to cross the desert," said Arpaio.

Jones said a cross will be placed in the desert where the most recent body was located.

All the crosses, made by Tent City Jail inmates, will be numbered and have GPS coordinates linked to those numbers, which will assist sheriff's deputies in locating future border crossers who call 911 for help.
