Miami County Sheriff: Teen doing target practice to blame for random I-35 shooting

MIAMI COUNTY, KS (KCTV) -

The Miami County Sheriff's Department said they believe a teen doing target practice is to blame for a shooting that injured a father driving along Interstate 35 with his family.

A release from the sheriff's department said officials spoke to residents in the area of I-35 and Edgerton Road days since last Friday's shooting, and learned that it may have been accidental.

Their investigation revealed the teen was shooting on a relative's property at West 215th Street and Edgerton Road in Edgerton, KS. The teen was using a pond dam for a back-stop to shoot into, and beyond the pond dam is the area where Mark Vanderweide was traveling in his van, when he was struck by the bullet.

Vanderweide and his family were heading to the lake about 8 p.m. Friday for a nice relaxing weekend when a bullet pierced their 2007 Dodge Caravan. He has months of recovery ahead. The bullet hit a main artery and doctors had to take a vein from his left leg to repair the right. It's unknown how much feeling he will regain.

The case will be referred to the County Attorney's office for review.
