BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The Medal of Honor is the highest honor a law officer can receive. On Thursday, it went to two deputies who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Families and friends gathered for the service at the Downtown Baton Rouge Hilton. The wives of fallen St. John Parish Sheriff Deputies Jeremy Triche and Brandon Nielsen accepted the medals on behalf of their husbands.

The two deputies were shot and killed last year in a shootout in a LaPlace mobile home park.

The case is on its way through the legal system.

The two other deputies who received the honor were from Calcasieu Parish and Natchitoches Parish.
