8th grader arrested after gun found in backpack at school

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - An 8th grade student was arrested Thursday after an unloaded gun was found in his backpack at Beechwood Superintendent Academy.

The 15-year-old was charged with illegal carrying of a weapon on school property and was booked into  juvenile detention.

East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office deputies were contacted around 11 a.m. by a school administrator after she received tips about the weapon.

Deputies found an unloaded .38 caliber handgun in the student's backpack. According to reports, the student gave no reason for having the weapon, and deputies are not aware of any threats that were made.
